The Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa (SCFSA) recently hosted a free skin cancer screening day at the dermatology practice of Dr Marc Röscher, dermatologist and CEO of SCFSA.
The initiative gave members of the community an opportunity to have their skin examined by a medical professional while also learning more about skin cancer prevention, sun protection and the importance of early detection.
Why skin cancer screening is important
Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. When detected early, however, treatment outcomes can be significantly improved.
Regular skin checks, together with knowing what is normal for your own skin, can help identify suspicious changes sooner and encourage people to seek professional medical advice when needed.
SCFSA continues to encourage South Africans to make regular skin checks part of their approach to long-term skin health.
Prevention starts with sun protection
Early detection is only one part of reducing the impact of skin cancer. Protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) exposure also plays an important role in prevention.
SCFSA is committed to educating communities about practical ways to protect their skin, including the regular use of sunscreen and responsible sun-safety habits.
A special thank you goes to Altruist for the generous donation of sunscreen products for the screening day. Their contribution helped reinforce an important message: sun protection should form part of everyday life.
Creating greater awareness together
SCFSA would like to thank everyone who participated in and supported the screening day.
Community initiatives such as these help create greater awareness of skin cancer, encourage regular skin checks and give more South Africans access to valuable information about protecting their skin.
Together, we can promote greater awareness, prevention and early detection across South Africa.
