About the Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa
Independent, self-funded NPO · Founded 2013 · NPO Reg 188-234
Founded by dermatologists to fight skin cancer across South Africa
The Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa (SCFSA) was founded in 2013 by a group of dermatologists. Dr Marc Beaumont Röscher is chairman of the Foundation.
SCFSA is an independent, self-funded organisation dedicated to preventing skin cancer and implementing a National Skin Cancer Screening Day, where South Africans can be screened for skin cancer free-of-charge in September. Our initial priority is to establish a comprehensive skin cancer prevention strategy for the people of South Africa.
The Foundation believes in sustainable long-term partnerships and cooperates with any groups, individuals, and societies that share our vision.
Education, awareness, and professional training
Each year, SCFSA hosts the Skin Cancer Update - a dedicated education event for doctors, dermatologists, and industry professionals. Focus sessions upskill healthcare practitioners on the latest clinical trends in skin cancer awareness, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Facilitating this professional training requires specialised skill and insight, which SCFSA provides.
With extensive media coverage, we aim to educate and inform the public about the dangers of skin cancer and how to avoid it. We assimilate and distribute information about skin cancer and its symptoms to the lay public, press, and medical professionals.
A lack of data about skin cancer in South Africa is a pressing concern and forms a key component of our activities.
Our main income comes from the annual Skin Cancer Update each year. These funds cover venues, event management, community education, and necessary travel from time to time.
